This role requires leadership, inspiration, effective communication, flexibility, and creativity in order to influence and transform college programs that support diversity and equity in such areas as student and employee recruitment and retention, student success, professional development, academic curriculum diversity, and college climate.
This position reports to the college President, serves as a member of the Executive Cabinet, and serves as the liaison between the college and the community to support the College’s Social Equity Plan. The Social Equity Plan includes goals related to: creating and sustaining an accessible and inclusive environment; improving intercultural competency among employees and students; and institutionalizing hiring and retention practices that challenge systems of power, privilege, and inequity.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Provide vision, leadership, coordination, and strategic planning for the implementation of the social equity plan to ensure diversity, inclusion, equity, and respect for all students, faculty, staff, partners, customers and public.
- Provide leadership in accordance with the Vision, Values, and Core themes established by the college to achieve mission fulfillment.
- Demonstrated understanding and conceptualization of diversity to include various intersecting identities that include, but are not limited to, race, technicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age and socio-economic status.
- Ensure the goals of the Social Equity Plan are prioritized, operationalized, and successfully implemented.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate Office of Diversity and Equity employees in accordance with negotiated agreements, applicable state and federal laws and College policies and procedures.
- Oversight of multicultural event programming.
- Provide oversight to and support of the Clark College Diversity Center.
- Partner with various units to develop comprehensive strategies for recruiting and retaining diverse students, faculty, and staff.
- Oversee departmental budget.
- Perform related duties as assigned by the president.
Serve as College champion to promote diversity and equity initiatives.
- Champion and promote an inclusive institution that honors and embraces social equity as the College’s strength and make recommendations on how to maximize this institutional strength; respond to identified needs to maintain an intentional and sustained focus on achieving diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Lead, develop, and support initiatives to eliminate student equity and achievement gaps.
- Create and expand opportunities to encourage student dialogue, engage systemically non-dominant populations, promote cultural competence across all constituencies, and affirm and celebrate the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.
- Lead the bias-based incident response protocol team.
- Recommend criteria to guide the College’s allocation of resources and strategic investments in support of institutional and unit diversity plans and initiatives.
- Develop strong partnerships with systemically non-dominant groups in the community by representing the College at civic, professional meetings, and conferences as well as facilitating connections for the President, Executive Cabinet members, and other College leaders to promote equity and achieve mutual objectives.
- Engage individuals and agencies outside the college community, including community leaders from all cultural groups, civic and grass-root organizations, and local government. Develop strong partnerships with systemically non-dominant groups in the community to promote equity and achieve mutual objectives.
- Analyze legislation related to equity, diversity, inclusion and non-discrimination and develop policy that ensures equity in compliance with all legal requirements.
Oversee diversity and equity programming for faculty, staff, and students.
- In conjunction with the Teaching and Learning Center and Human Resources, develop and implement institutional employee training to promote cultural understanding and competency and a climate of equity and inclusion.
- Assisting senior leaders in developing systems of accountability for reaching diversity and equity goals and objectives.
- Support academic administrators and faculty in the development of equitable and inclusive curricula, courses, and teaching practices.
Develop metrics to inform strategic planning/decision-making and to ensure accountability in tracking and monitoring diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Monitor and support college recruitment efforts to reach compositional diversity metrics at the top quartile of state institutions and develop effective programs to attract and retain a diverse employee population, especially full- and part-time faculty.
- Work in conjunction with Planning and Effectiveness in conducting campus climate studies, demographic studies, and policy analyses.
- Work in conjunction with Planning and Effectiveness to organize and develop necessary annual reports of the college’s effort in recruitment and successful completion of under-represented student populations in transfer and workplace development programs.
- Cultural competence as evidenced by a strong record of advocacy and systemic change for the needs of systemically non-dominant populations.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
- Proven ability to employ effective critical thinking skills; seek resources or direction when necessary. Decision-making is logical and deliberate.
- Track record of performing actions that demonstrate accountability with knowledge of legal and ethical guidelines.
- Excellent expressive and written communication skills, including the ability to engage in one-on-one settings and in public forums.
- Demonstrated experience in effective problem-solving, especially in cases requiring quick action and resolution.
- Proven ability to build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated skill in developing effective, engaging training programs for employees, students and college patrons.
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience contributing to large-scale initiatives within diversity, equity, and inclusion in complex organizations.
- Three years of progressively responsible experience in a senior-level diversity-related position.
- Bilingual skills.
- Higher education administrative experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to antidiscrimination.
